April 29 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us Monday 29th for a film screening of “A Flood in Baath Country” by Omar Amiralay, France 2004, a film that unveils the brutal autocracy and devastating impact of 35 years of Baath party rule in Syria.

A FLOOD IN BAATH COUNTRY
Omar Amiralay, France 2004, 47 min.

The film A Flood in Baath Country from 2003 zooms in on a Syrian village that represents a microcosm of the Baath party and their rule. The leaders promised socialism but instead introduced a strict autocracy that forced people into submission through brutal force, indoctrination and systematic humiliation that started in primary schools.

The film moves slowly from students to teachers to government officials, with everyone reciting exactly the same praise for the president and slogans glorifying the Baath party. The film is a harsh indictment of the regime, portraying the devastating effects of 35 years of rigid Baath party rule on Syrian society.
